Ban All Nukes Generation (BANG) is hosting a five-part nuclear-themed film series that emphasizes a three-part process for disarmament: Learn. Discuss. Act. Join BANG this summer at the Magic Gardens on South Street for public screenings, followed by open discussions featuring commentaries by guest film and nuclear policy experts. A suggested donation of $6 will cover your admission, wine, and refreshments. This event is sponsored by Project for Nuclear Awareness, Philadelphia's Magic Gardens, TLA Video, The University of the Arts, and BigJ Media.

    June 12, 2009 | *DOUBLE FEATURE* Einstein's Letter AND Trinity and Beyond

    Einstein's Letter: An in-depth overview of the journey and influence of Albert Einstein's role in the development of the atomic bomb. Intelligently raises the roles of morality, responsibility, and security of the nuclear issue.

    Trinity and Beyond: An explosive video history of the nuclear age, from its roots in the Manhattan Project to the modern-day arsenal. Footage includes restored and computer enhanced images of tests in the Nevada desert and the South Pacific, and their disturbing results.

    Introduced by PNA assistant director Kim Nguyen. Discussion led by Ed Aguilar, PNA executive director and nuclear policy expert, and PNA research associate and youth advocate leader, Emily Gleason.

    Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worry and Love the Bomb is Stanley Kubrick's Cold War masterpiece. Based on the novel RED ALERT by Peter George, the film is set at the height of the tensions between Russia and the United States, when all it would take to destroy the world was one push of a button.

    Featured Speaker: Dr.Martin Novelli, Dean of Humanities, Fine Arts, and Media Studies at Ocean County Community College, and adjunct professor for Liberal Arts at The University of the Arts.

Matthew Broderick stars in this 1983 thriller as a computer whiz kid who accidentally hacks into a top secret super-computer which has complete control over the U.S. nuclear arsenal. As it challenges him to a game between America and Russia, he innocently starts the countdown to World War 3. Can he convince the computer he wanted to play a game and not the real thing?

Featured Speaker: Mary Boardman, International Relations major at the University of Pennsylvania, and long-time activist in nuclear disarmament issues. She has worked with numerous organizations on global security issues including PNA, GSI, and PSR.

July 24, 2009 | On the Beach (1959)

The year is 1964. The nuclear war that was waged in the northern hemisphere has ended. An American nuclear submarine, The Sawfish, at sea in the mid-Pacific makes its way down the coast of Australia where there appear to be survivors. Docking at the port of Melbourne, the crew, commanded by Lt. Commander Dwight Towers live out their lives waiting for the radioactive winds from the North to slowly make their way towards them, ending all life as we know it.
